According to the report:
A method for studying certain carbohydrates linked to pancreatic cancer and other diseases has been developed by the Van Andel Research Institute’s Scientific Investigator Brian Haab, Ph.D, and lead project scientist Songming Chen, Ph.D. The method identifies and measures alterations in the structure of carbohydrates on proteins that may play a role in cancer.
Certain proteins in the blood of pancreatic cancer patients studied by the VARI using the new method have revealed previously unknown alterations of the carbohydrates, also known as protean glycans.
“Previously, no efficient or effective method existed to quantitatively study glycan variation on specific proteins in multiple biological samples,” stated Dr. Haab. “This is a first and important step in better diagnosis and treatment.”
