2010 U.S. Census generates thousands of jobs for West Michigan

In preparation for the upcoming 2010 Census, the United State Census Bureau has set up offices across the state to begin recruiting workers to conduct and process the census information. The Grand Rapids office at 401 Hall St. SW, Suite 330, is now open and preparing to hire some 800 to 1,000 employees.

“We just hired six managers to set up the Grand Rapids office, and they will hire 30 to 40 clerks, administrative assistants, recruiters and others who will staff the office from January 2009 to the summer of 2010,” says Kim Hunter, Census Bureau spokesperson.

“After that they will recruit another 800 to 1,000 people to do address canvassing,” he continues. “Those people will go out and verify all the addresses.”

Although the office is located in Grand Rapids, its jurisdiction covers all of West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, from the southern boundary of Kent and Ottawa counties, north.

Hunter expects the office to hire workers from each region who will work in their home area. Those jobs could include updating address lists, collecting data from area residents and working with local officials to ensure an accurate count.
