With interest in the philosophy and practice of sustainable development soaring across West Michigan, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently approved a $396,800 grant to ramp up 'green' manufacturing practices across the region.
One of the more significant deliverables of the project involves introducing at least 25 manufacturers to the so-called Green Supplier Network, a partnership of both economic and enviromental advocates which aims to help industry leaders slash expenses and boost profits by eliminating waste and ecological degradation.
"This type of sustainable business practice will increase their competitiveness and decrease operating costs," said Birgit Klohs, president of The Right Place, Inc., which will administer the grant jointly with the West Michigan Strategic Alliance.
"We will help businesses learn from each other with regard to existing sustainable practices in the region, including alternative energy use and new manufacturing technologies that reduce waste streams," added Greg Northrup, president of the West Michigan Strategic Alliance.
