In an effort to prepare a trained workforce and cultivate talented people to staff West Michigan's booming healthcare industry, a coalition of organizations in Grand Rapids is establishing the Summer Healthcare Career Academy.
The Grand Rapids Community Foundation recently awarded a $75,000 grant to help launch the iniatitive.
Led by Grand Rapids Community College, the academy will work the Kent Intermediate School District to produce students highly skilled in math and science, key compentencies for a career in the medical or biotech industries.
The academy is part of a broader strategy targeting students, counselors, and teachers to develop a workforce of skilled people and continue the growth of the region's life sciences industry. The community college already offers several courses designed to introduce students to the medical field and prepare them to secure goo-paying jobs.
