30,000 GVSU grads work in West MI

Grand Valley State University is a major force driving west Michigan's transformation for the global knowledge economy, University President Thomas Hass recently told a group gathered for the Muskegon Area Chamber of Commerce's Early Bird Breakfast.

In addition to locating new building in central cities and spurring revitalization efforts in Grand Rapids and Muskegon, GVSU also is the region's leading institutions when it comes to preparing students with the skills they need to land good-paying jobs in the global knowledge economy. And the university's reach extends well beyond West Michigan, Haas said.

"We can draw from the east side of the state," Haas said, noting that 13 percent of the university's students come from southeast Michigan. "We bring them to West Michigan and they stay for our quality of life or for the entrepreneurial spirit found here."

"Grand Valley is a net importer of human capital" he said.

Indeed, 30,000 of the University's 60,000 graduates in the past 46 years still work or reside in the region, according to a recent report in the Muskegon Chronicle.
