While West Michigan sheds thousands of manufacturing jobs, the medical campus rising on Health Hill in downtown Grand Rapids is attracting young talented students, scientists from around the world, and historic levels of private investment to the central city and the region around it.
Economic development officials predict the burgeoning life sciences industry will generate thousands of highly skilled, good paying jobs and ultimately speed the region's transition from the Industrial Era to the 21st century knowledge economy.
"It has truly changed the conversation in town about what it is we can be in the future," Birgit Klohs, president of the Right Place, Inc., told WOOD TV 8.
