The 85 projects that received public funding in the first round of Michigan's 21st Century Jobs Initiative are expected to generate some 3,500 employment opportunities across the state, according to Jeff Mason, senior vice president of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
But ultimately positioning the state to compete successfully in the global economy will require modern policies to promote entrepreneurialism and investment at all stages of business development, not just seed funding.
The remarks came at a recent meeting of the New Economy and Quality of Life Committee in the state House of Representatives. Rep. Bill Huizenga, of Zeeland, is a member of that committee.
Rep. Huizenga was happy to hear Michigan is developing a pipeline to support a culture of innovative people and ideas. But he encouraged state economic development officials to stay engaged with new companies as they grow.
