Executives at Holland’s Siemens Water Technologies aren’t making any job numbers predictions, but say that a recent agreement with a Korean dewatering device manufacturer could produce jobs as sales of the devices catch on across the United States.
The equipment, called ELODE, is a secondary dewatering device made by Busan, Korea-based ACE Korea, Inc. Dewatering devices remove water from contaminated sludge, making it drier, lighter and easier to haul and dispose. Siemens will be the exclusive distributor of the product in the U.S., Canada, Hong Kong, China and Macao.
“The ELODE is designed to take dewatered solids from a filter press, belt press or centrifuge, which are in the 18 to 25 percent dry solids range, and further process them through electro-osmosis to produce a cake product that is 40 to 60 percent dry solids,” says Bob Bosgraaf, Siemens’ director of product management.
“Initially no West Michigan jobs will be added, but as the product becomes successful, we will be adding positions in product management, project management and field service,” Bosgraaf adds.
Moving production of the ELODE to the U.S. is a possible option after the product gains a foothold in the U.S. market.
In the meantime, the ELODE is expected to boost global sales of Siemens dewatering products manufactured in Holland, primarily belt presses, centrifuges and filter presses; the Korean product works in conjunction with these devices to yield greater than 40 percent dry solids.
That could reduce municipal and industrial waste sludge volumes by half or more, saving cities and companies money on sludge disposal and on energy consumption—the ELODE technology uses less energy than some other drying technologies.
