It’s been just over a year since the Lake Michigan Credit Union broke ground on its $1.3 million branch at Michigan Street and Prospect Avenue in the midst of Grand Rapids’ Medical Mile. Besides offering traditional banking services, a 24 ATM and drive-up service, the new venture created eight new jobs and offers a surprising “perk”— a coffee shop with wireless Internet access.
“The convenience of a credit union branch in the heart of the Medical Mile will add to the appeal of the area for other business development,” says Julie Blitchok, spokesperson. “When people can work, shop, attend school, get a bite to eat and a cup of coffee and take care of their banking all within walking distance, it makes the area more attractive to businesses, employees, and consumers.”
The jobs include new branch manager, member service representative and teller positions, as well as jobs in the coffee shop.
The coffee shop, “The Perk,” is a unique offering among credit unions in West Michigan. The Perk features coffee drinks from Schuil Coffee and traditionally bakery items.
The branch offers checking and savings accounts and loans, and includes offices for LMCU’s growing mortgage, insurance and investment services.
The building borrows distinctive aspects from other new buildings in the Medical Mile, including the extensive use of glass and natural light.
"Our architects and designers researched the overall landscape to ensure we fit well within the community,” Blitchok says. “The aesthetics of our new building compliment the Medical Mile along Michigan Avenue."
Lott3Metz designed the building. Pioneer Construction handled the construction.
