In another sign of West Michigan's ongoing emergence as a prominent center of health care service and innovation, Metro Health Hospital in Grand Rapids, along with Hackley Hospital and Mercy General Health Partners, both of Muskegon, ranked among the nation's Top 100 Hospitals in a survey conducted by a leading independent source.
Solucient, a leading provider of health care information, analyzed the clinical, operational, and financial performance of more than 2,800 hospitals across the country. The Top 100 award honors institutions that excel in patient safety, fiscal management, overall effectiveness, and other benchmarks.
Hackley and Mercy General received honors for patient care and exceptional finance. And Metro Health was recognized as a standout in the 'teaching hospitals' category, an award based largely on the fact that the hospital is a leading trainer of physicians.
"[The award] is the equivalent of an Academy Award in our industry," said Mike Faas, president and CEO of Metro. "The Solucient study is one of the most rigourous analyses of any health care awards. The organization looks at data gathered by Medicare from all hospitals, which ensures an apples-to-apples comparison."
"Hospitals do not apply for the award," Faas added. "It is unsolicited praise from the most respected and independent of sources."
More than half of the hospitals recognized in the recent study are located in the Midwest. Metro Health, Hackley, and Mercy General join 29 other hospitals from Michigan and Ohio among the award recipients.
