GR co. makes Web site for military families

Two Grand Rapids companies have joined together launch what they hope to be a comprehensive online relocation and lifestyle resource for military families who are moving between bases.

MilitaryAvenue.com, was conceived by Grand Rapids Internet entrepreneur Dan Kissinger, who serves as president and CEO, and his father Dale Kissinger, a retired Air Force Colonel. During the Colonel’s 30-year career with the Air Force, the family experienced 18 moves spanning 14 different states, three different countries and 19 different schools.

“Approximately 33 percent of active duty military personnel relocate to another base each year,” Dan Kissinger said in a statement issued earlier this month.  “These moves cause tremendous strain upon families who must pull up their roots and integrate into new communities.”

The goal is to help these families by offering a comprehensive directory of service providers and public services. The site is organized into over 100 categories, offering views of over 200 military installations and their surrounding communities, providing base check-in procedures and information about local schools, weather, and maps.

MilitaryAvenue teamed with Grand Rapids-based software developer PEC to create a site that allows service members to select their branch of service and then locate local listings for both their current installation and their destination installation.

MilitaryAvenue.com currently serves 218 military bases nationwide, and hopes to expand internationally.
