Within its first month of operation, Grand Rapids-based
MinoritySpace.com says it gained 3,000 users and had hundreds of thousands of hits each week.
Opening last month, the social networking site tailored to minorities was created to steer users away from less community-friendly sites such as MySpace, says MinoritySpace.com co-founder Steve Eilers
“I think that since MinoritySpace.com is not over-populated with spammers, scammers, pedophiles, and advertisements, that we will be able to provide a really good service to our users, especially locally,” says Eilers, adding that the site isn’t just for minorities.
“We created it to unite minorities, not to separate them,” says Eilers. “Grand Rapids is a very culturally diverse area in West Michigan. A huge percent of our target audience live right here in this great city.”
Eilers, a business administration major at Grand Rapids Community College, co-founded the site with Casey Danford, a computer information systems graduate from Ferris State. Eilers says the two are constantly working on the site, which offers free unlimited picture and music uploading, contests and other features they say similar sites do not.
A percentage of the profits for the site, which are obtained through advertising, go to non-profit organizations like the NAACP.
