Moxie’s Ice Cream & Running Dogs may take up a mere 400-square-foot corner in a massive house at Union and Michigan Streets. But its impact on the neighborhood is no little thing. Business was bustling when the store opened a few weeks ago, and ten new jobs—manager, assistant managers, and wait staff—were on the payroll.
“I already owned the building and was trying to find a higher use for the property and I saw a need,” says Keith Cannon, owner of Cannon & Co., the project’s developer.
Cannon plans to develop the rest of the building but declined to provide details.
“I’m not at liberty to discuss particulars,” he says. “But it will create about 15 jobs.”
Until then, Moxie’s is serving walk-up customers Running Dogs (chili dogs, hot dogs, cheese dogs), chili cheese fries, walking tacos, and premium soft and hand-dipped ice cream. Customers can enjoy them on the patio tucked behind the building while they listen to the blues piped in from satellite radio.
“The blues is kind of an oxymoron,” Cannon says. “Who's got the blues when they're eating ice cream?”
