Innovative software developer creates patented data integrity system

If your company ever has to prove in court that its electronic data has—or has not—been tampered with, will you be able to confirm it beyond question? One West Michigan company has developed a patented technology that generates tamper indicators for electronic records.

Grand Rapids-based ProofSpace developed its ProofMark technology, also called proprietary transient key technology, to run on a company's IT system or as a hosted service on a web site. The technology can be set up to seal email messages, documents, contracts, accounting packages, databases, data warehouses and more.

"Look at the change in packaging because of the Tylenol tampering years ago," says Paul Doyle, ProofSpace founder and CEO. "There were controls in place, but not at the point of the bottle contents. We provide content control for informational content."

One variety of the application, called ProofDoc, seals any document saved to an enhanced folder within the software.

"It can be used to seal designs, song lyrics, anything of value," Doyle says.

ProofMail generates tamper indicators for email, and can be purchased by corporations on a per user basis.

Doyle goes on to say that, just as tamper-proof packaging soon moved beyond pill bottles to include most consumables, electronic tamper indicators will soon be needed across industries to protect documents such as medical records, intellectual property, and pharmaceutical records.
