Primerica seeks caring people for 300 financial advisor, management jobs in West Michigan

In a push to open 10 new branches in West Michigan, Atlanta, GA-based Primerica Financial Services seeks to fill some 250 to 300 new financial advisor and managerial positions. The jobs will be located in an area bounded by Muskegon, Holland and Grand Rapids.

"This is going to sound a little corny, but we're looking for people who like to help other people," says Les Porter, national sales director. "They'll be sitting down with clients, taking financial data and analyzing it to help them put together financial game plans for life. We also need people to help us hire, train and staff these 10 new offices."

Primerica provides the training to get new hires licensed in mutual funds, insurance, annuities and health. Trainees don't receive an hourly wage for the training, but will qualify for a $1,000 bonus when training is completed, says Porter. He adds that new hires will begin with six to eight hours a week, and build up to full-time as they acquire skills.

Porter joined Primerica 29 years ago, fresh out of Grand Valley State University. But he says a college degree isn't a requirement for the job because of the extensive training each employee receives. He cites himself as an example.

"I'm a wildlife biologist by training," he says. "Unemployment was high, and so many things blocked me from getting a job in the biology field. I figured I'd only be with Primerica for a summer. Here I am, 30 years later, and I can't think of anything I'd rather do."

Porter says he's seen more people in the 50-plus age group and more new college graduates join the Primerica team than at any time since he's been with the company.

"I don't want people to think that they're too old or too young to send in a resume," he says.
