Greenville solar company lands $19 million in energy grants

President George Bush must have been impressed last year after touring United Solar Ovonics. Because the U.S. Department of Energy last week announced more than $19 in federal grants to help advance the company's solar technology research.

United Solar, based in Auburn Hills, is poised to open its first Greenville manufacturing plant, a second plant is under construction in the town north of Grand Rapids, and at least four more are on the drawing board.

When fully operational, the six plants could employ as many as 6,000 workers, signifying that alternative energy innovation is an increasinly important and growing sector of West Michigan's economy.
