State grant aims to retrain, retain 195 GR manufacturing workers

In a welcomed boost to the campaign to modernize the skills of the local workforce, state economic development officials announced nearly $65,000 in job training grants for some 195 workers, including as many as 130 new employees, at Surefill and Citation Corp., two Grand Rapids companies.

Grand Rapids Community College will administer the grants, which were approved by the state Economic Development Corporation. The money is dedicated to upgrading the skills in advanced manufacturing processes.

"This training will not only benefit the companies but also enhance the region's ability to attract new investment through increasing its pool of qualified workers," Birgit Klohs, president of the Right Place, Inc., told MiBiz.com.
