VAI scientists invent new way to strengthen bones

Researchers at the Van Andel Institute uncovered a method to increase bone density that could ultimately lead to new treatments for osteoporosis and bone fractures.

The findings, which were recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, illustrate the kind of innovation that's taking shape on Health Hill, a campus of high tech medical labs, research institutes, and hospitals rising in downtown Grand Rapids. The campus is a key component of West Michigan's plan to diversify the regional economy.

"Actual treatments may be years in development, but initial findings are promising," Dr. Bart Williams, a senior researcher at VAI, said in a press release.
