GRCC to offer new wind energy technology class starting in February

In keeping with its commitment to innovation and sustainability, Grand Rapids Community College  is introducing a new class: Wind Energy Technology (ER 145) starting in February.

Taught by wind expert Mary Bigelow of Coopersville, the class is in response to the growing alternative energy industry in West Michigan, according to GRCC Director of Work Force Training Julie Parks. "She was a great find for this class," Parks says of Bigelow. "It's hard to find good people who have experience with the wind industry. Mary fits the bill."

Bigelow works at Contractors Building Supply of Copemish near Manistee with Allan Shea, the founder of the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). She is certified by the U.S. Green Building Council  Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design(LEED) as a Green Associate.

The three-credit class will introduce students to the technology of wind and its connection to the production of electrical energy. An emphasis will be placed on the logistics, design, installation, performance and maintenance of small and large-scale wind turbines. Related safety concerns will also be discussed.

The 12-week class will be held from 5:45 p.m. to 10 p.m. every Tuesday starting February 9. To enroll, visit this GRCC website. The class is nearly full, so Parks is talking to Bigelow about starting another section.

"This is just the beginning," promises Parks, noting that the college is working on creating a renewable energy certification along with an associate of arts degree. "It'll make people marketable for wind, solar -- all kinds of alternative energy areas. It's exciting for us! It's never been as big as it is now."

Parks says the college may offer a course in the technology of lithium-ion batteries later this year.
