An MDOT photographer probably wasn’t aware of the recent push to make design an industry in West Michigan, but when his photograph of handcrafted wooden boats made in Holland was selected as the MDOT Michigan Map cover, he’ll be spreading the word about the water wonderland state and its skilled designers.

An MDOT photographer probably wasn’t aware of the recent push to make design an industry in West Michigan, but when his photograph of handcrafted wooden boats made in Holland was selected as the MDOT Michigan Map cover, he’ll be spreading the word about the water wonderland state and its skilled designers.

HOLLAND — As a photographer for the Michigan Department of Transportation, Tim Burke was looking for ideas for photos to highlight the state as a water recreation mecca.

“We wanted to do a nautical theme, but we didn’t want it to totally focus on lighthouses,” he said.

Burke was interested in shooting Holland’s Big Red lighthouse, but also wanted to incorporate state-manufactured boats in his shots. So he hopped on his computer and found Grand-Craft, a Holland firm specializing in mahogany runabouts.
