Civic Theatre to become Meijer Majestic Theatre

Fred Meijer gave a reported $5 to $6.5 million for the $10 million restoration of the Civic Theatre. In recognition, the theater’s board has approved renaming the building Meijer Majestic Theatre.

According to excerpts from the story:

Retail magnate Fred Meijer said he is more excited about the reopening of Grand Rapids Civic Theatre next month than if he was opening another store.

“When you open four or five stores a year, it starts to get routine,” Meijer said. “Opening a theater like this is rare; it’s one of a kind.”

In recognition of Meijer’s multimillion dollar gift for the $10 million restoration of the 103-year-old theater, the Civic board has approved renaming the building Meijer Majestic Theatre.
