Adding yet another important dimension to the cutting-edge and collaborative medical innovation taking place on Health Hill, Spectrum Health and Van Andel Institute recently announced they are partnering to establish a special center focused specifically on developing new technologies to research and treat cancer, heart disease, mental illness, and other conditions at the molecular level.

The $6 million Center for Molecular Medicine will combine expertise from both VAI and Spectrum to push the boundaries of biotech. It will include a technologically advanced laboratory that will help the region attract pharmaceutical and other health-related companies who seek to conduct their work in a world-class medical research environment, according to a press release issued by Van Andel Institute.

“We must move our findings from the research laboratory to the clinical laboratory,” said David Van Andel, chairman and CEO of Van Andel Institute. “The Center for Molecular Medicine will allow us to do this in an accelerated fashion and positively impact human health.”

“We have the research expertise and Spectrum Health has a large patient population which allows us to apply what we’re learning directly into the clinical setting,” Van Andel added.
