Earlier this summer, a new kind of race debuted in this region and the fun appears to just to be beginning as more and more people are registering for the next edition of the Grand Rapids Urban Adventure.

A unique twist according to the organizers is that this is possibly the first sporting event where art and physical fitness meet on the playing field of a city.

Oh, and you need to use your brain as well.

The map of the course is not revealed until race day so at press time, even Rapid Growth does not know the ins and outs. But, this first-time art/race/pedal/think event over the last weekend of ArtPrize is already looking to break the record 750 who signed up for their July race.

With numbers looking to hit their 1000 limit (or 500 teams), the contestants who are using Twitter and Facebook to psyche out the other players are really upping the ante Mohammad Ali style.

Even our publisher Jeff Hill and Managing Editor Juliet Bennett Rylah are competing against each other in this event, which I am sure is going to become more Billy Jean King and Jimmy Connors than Rocky and “Ms. T” as the battle of the sexes heats up before the competition.

The contestants will gather back at Founders Brewing Co. post-race for lunch and brews. At the end of the race, prizes and awards will be handed out including a special award presented by Rapid Growth’s Lifestyle Editor, Tommy Allen of a one-night stay at the lovely JW Marriott for the team with the best super hero outfit.
