With the erection of a 100-foot wind tower, students and faculty at Montague schools have the opportunity to study wind speeds and determine the feasibility of establishing a permanent tower to supplement the schools’ energy needs.

According to excerpts from the story:

A hands-on wind-energy project at Montague schools could have educational, environmental and economic benefits for the school district and its students.

A prime real-world assignment, the exploration of generating wind energy on school district property will provide students with actual data to study, allow the school district to consider an environmental-friendly way to supply some of its power needs and possibly give school officials another way to save money without cutting additional services in an ever-tightening budget.

…Kyle Fiebig, Montague High School agri-science teacher and FFA adviser, said the test tower will allow students to study wind speeds at that location and examine the potential for construction of a wind turbine to serve a school building. If the data collected is favorable, the goal is to seek grants or private company assistance to erect a wind turbine.
