December is a great time to think about the many things we have in our community and the gifts they give us all year ’round. One such item is the gift of song and no other vocal group does it with such style as the Grand Rapids Women’s Chorus, who present an evening of beautiful and inspiring music at their annual Winter Concert.

This internationally recognized chorus will once again challenge our ears to listen as they showcase an eclectic showcase of songs, including a Czech folksong with cello from Donald Patriquin’s World Music Suite called “Ach, Synku, Synku” and “Winter’s Night” by Nicholas Myers.

And as they have done in the past to spotlight different cultural experiences, this year they present a segment devoted to better understanding our local Latino community and the issues they face. Included in this special segment will be a number by Pat Humphries (of Emmas’s Revolution) that explores some of the challenging issues facing our immigrant families, “If I Give Your Name.”

In celebration of our solidarity with those struggling, the chorus will feature “Juntos” by Jim Papoulis, a lyrical piece that proclaims “Juntos somos fuertes” meaning “together we are strong” with wonderful Latin rhythms, as they close out it out with  the number “Here’s Where I Stand” from the musical “Camp.” There is even a festive and fun piece in Arabic called “Sih’r Khalaq” which borders on Bollywood, as well as many more songs that will make you smile.

Immediately following is a reception for attendees to mingle and meet the singers and musicians.

Admission: Donations accepted.
