G-Sync - Will The Creative Ideas Please Step Forward

By Tommy Allen

What starts off as a great idea can sometimes collapse under the weight of lofty intentions.  But a great idea that is executed well can also raise an entire community to new heights -- and I think that is the case with ArtPrize.

On Monday as the number of artists arriving in Grand Rapids to engage in the competition topped 200, I received an unexpected phone call, simply stating: “I have something to show you connected to ArtPrize” and the caller insisted I come over immediately.

I am glad that I did.  While I'm not at liberty now to divulge the idea, I can say that it isn't a work of art, but rather something inspired by ArtPrize's spirit that may make a lasting impression on metro Grand Rapids.

There isn't any doubt in my mind that ArtPrize's fall event will make this summer one of the most memorable in our city's history. As many tweet and post on Facebook about their ArtPrize entry’s progress, others who may not have any intention of entering the competition have suggested using the ArtPrize weeks as a great opportunity to place a creative idea in motion.

Reflecting back on my initial talks with ArtPrize creator Rick DeVos at the launch was a tiny discussion about our shared belief that other events and projects would spring up as a result. And with much pride, I am happy to report it appears to be happening. I am sure in the weeks to come my inbox will be a flutter with heart-stopping fresh ideas.

Some people claim to have ambitious artistic goals that never leave the bar talk stage, but I am applauding the others who have vacated their seats at the drawing board to share their passion (and actionable plans) with others.    Sometimes dreamers are doers, too.

Choose local.…and often.
