This summer marks the 10th anniversary season of the Jazz at the Zoo series held at John Ball Park, and it’s fitting that the milestone is marked by the return of Arno Marsh, who will make a rare appearance with his son (and former member of the local jazz sensation, Organissimo) Randy Marsh for a special night of jazz on Monday.
The quintet made up of Arno on tenor sax, Chris Lawrence on trumpet, Steve Sandner on piano and vocals, Jeff Beavan on bass, and Randy Marsh on drums, will entertain the audience with an eclectic selection of standards most jazz fans will recognize like the famous Coleman Hawkins ballad “Body & Soul.”
“My dad and I try to play together as much as circumstances allow,” Randy Arno says about his father who lives in Boulder City, Nev., “My father’s big sound comes from all the influences stemming back to the dawning of the modern era of jazz.”
It should be mentioned that Arno is playing a 1954 Selmer Mark 6 previously owned by tenor legend, Stan Getz. Now that is worth getting out of the house to hear in person.
