Movies in the Park: Hairspray – The Grassy Drive-In Arrives In EGR
What comes to life at night with a little coaxing and is 30-feet high? The obvious answer is the hair when talking about Hairspray (the musical), but on Friday night it actually is the huge pop-up cinema screen that will be at Collins Park for the start of its Movies in the Park series.
The free film, Hairspray, is based on the Tony award-winning Broadway musical of the same name, which was in turn based on the 1988 film by the beautifully twisted mind of John Waters. Are you still with me? This story has legs and knows how to use them.
This sugary sweet film is set in the segregated 1950s and revolves around a pleasantly plump teenager named Tracy Turnblad and how her pursuit of a spot on the popular dance- themed Corny Collins Show leads to lessons about the world around her.
The film moves at a lightning pace and has many catchy tunes that are bound to get caught in your head long after the film’s colorful closing credits have faded to black.
A hot dog dinner with chips and ice cream will be made available courtesy of Macatawa Bank with proceeds going to the Reeds Lake Trail Project.
