Hollywood has been trying to concoct the perfect modern Iraqi war film, and with each entry it seems to be losing as they approach the weekly opening night battle.
But on Friday night, the critically acclaimed new film "The Hurt Locker" finally opens in West Michigan. If I were a betting man, I would say this one is going to land in the winner’s circle come award season.
The film focuses on the lives of the unsung heroes of the war: those Army technicians who’s job it is to disarm everything from car bombs to land mines that hide below their feet. And the tension of this realistic action film is stunningly executed by the art house darling, Kathryn Bigelow, who has not seen this much critical love since her films The Loveless, Near Dark and Point Break opened back in the ‘90s.
Normally a major motion picture rarely makes the hallowed halls of G-Sync, but guests are encouraged on Sunday to stay after the film to attend the discussion group with My 2 Cents John Serba, film critic at the Grand Rapids Press, who can always be counted for biting, but spot-on reviews.
Just think of this as a book club for movie lovers, but only with better seats.
Admission: $7.00
