The city is lucky to have so many sporting teams and opportunities to compete, but one area in which we really should be especially proud is the arrival and growth of our local Grand Raggidy Roller Girls team, who formed in 2005, the very same year that 29 other teams did as well, to launch of the WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association). Today WFTDA’s membership boasts more than 200 international teams.
This Saturday we welcome the Ann Arbor Derby Dimes to the track for a double header, but it also signals the return of the 6th annual Grand Raggidy Roller Derby Girls Beer Bash.
For this special match you will not only have the opportunity to watch our girls’ longtime sponsors, Schmohz Brewery and New Holland Brewing Company, battle to retain their 2012 win over the Derby Dimes and their sponsor Arbor Brewing Company, but this year there is a chance for you be a winner too.
It is common knowledge that the 2014 Michigan Brewers’ Guild annual Winter Beer Festival held in West Michigan is once again sold out. The Roller Girls will be offering an opportunity for those attending to win a pair of these nearly impossible-to-come-by tickets.
And why is this match so popular?
“The Beer brawl is our way to bring two vibrantly expressive and passionate groups of fans together,” says Schmohz Brewery Beer Engineer Chas Thompson. “Michigan beer lovers to derby groupies and everyone in between are all a part of this winning combination of why fans love the annual Beer Bash!”
In addition to the Beer Bash, the Roller Girls will be hosting their very first fundraising event, a
Retro Prom on Saturday, Dec. 21 at Creston’s The Rezervoir Lounge. Dress like a prom mess! Tickets for the Retro Prom are only $5 each.
Admission: $12 in advance, $15 game day (also $10 for students and $8 for kids)
