Developer targets former Muskegon furniture shop for industrial arts studio

Downtown Muskegon on the verge of a development blitz. And one forward-thinking business owner hopes to create a unique art studio that will encompass all forms of art and attract shoppers and artists, alike.

The planned conversion of the former Al Perri furniture store building into an arts center on Pine Street at Clay Avenue got the nod of approval from the city of Muskegon's planning commission Thursday.

As requested by Michael Schaafsma of Aenis LLC, planning commissioners agreed unanimously to include "craft shops" as a special use within the B-4 general business zone the building is in.

Subject to final approval by the city's fire marshal, permission has been granted for activities like glass-blowing, small-scale metal cutting and welding, and kiln-fired pottery making within the three-story, 31,500-square-foot building at 764 Pine.
