$11M culinary arts school slated for downtown Muskegon

A growing job market in the culinary arts industry is pushing enrollment upward in Baker College's culinary arts school, and that has prompted educational leaders to approve construction of a new state-of-the-art facility on the former Muskegon Mall site. The hope is that increased visibility will increase enrollment college-wide.

In planning to build a new $11 million culinary arts school in the heart of downtown, Baker College of Muskegon aims for a higher position both educationally and locally.

Baker College views the new home for the culinary arts school as becoming a regional, perhaps even national, draw for students seeking to become chefs or food-service managers.

The college wants a culinary arts school that is unique in the Midwest, said Alex Erdman, a master chef and dean of culinary arts at the college.
