Salvation Army seeks GRPS land for youth center

Salvation Army officials say they’d like to purchase 6.4 additional acres adjacent to the proposed Kroc Community Center site in order to provide additional soccer fields for the 11,000 neighborhood children expected to use the center. The acreage belongs to the Grand Rapids Public Schools who is considering the purchase proposal.

The debris-filled lot along South Division Avenue doesn't look like much yet, but local Salvation Army officials say they continue to make progress on their plans for a Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center.

Local Army officials hope to add even more property to the 8-acre site from which they have been clearing buildings and rubble.Maj. Roger Ross, who will operate the new center, said they hope to buy an additional 6.4 acres from Grand Rapids Public Schools.
