Nonprofit developers target 130 Madison Square dwellings for improvements

Two of Grand Rapids' largest non-profit housing organizations are targeting several multi-family housing units on the city's southeast side for some major makeovers. A $17 million investment will cover the purchase and renovation of the dwellings.

GRAND RAPIDS -- The area's two largest nonprofit housing developers are combining for an extreme makeover of the Madison Square Housing Cooperative.

The project includes a 60-unit apartment building at 500 Hall St. SE and 73 units scattered in 14 locations throughout the city's near Southeast Side.

"This is not just a matter of new paint and carpet," he said. Their plans also call for new porches, bigger windows and garages for some of the town houses.
