Michigan medical schools undergoing largest expansion in 30 years

MSU's College of Human Medicine's Grand Rapids location will graduate 200 doctors by 2010, double the number graduated this year. More increases are expected across the state, and the governor wants it to be a coordinated effort.

LANSING -- Michigan's medical schools are experiencing their biggest expansion in more than three decades.

Michigan State University is doubling the size of its two medical schools, while Oakland University and Central Michigan University are considering opening new colleges of medicine.

The most aggressive school has been MSU. Its College of Human Medicine produces 100 doctors a year, but it plans to double that number by opening a Grand Rapids campus by 2010.
