GRAND RAPIDS — Hey, Lansing! Where’s the love?

If there’s one underlying question motivating this week’s Regional Policy Conference, that might be it.

The agenda treads some ground — government reforms, budget issues — covered at the Detroit Chamber of Commerce’s heavily attended annual Mackinac Conference.

But the inaugural event takes a distinctly West Michigan flair, with conservative commentator George Will as its keynote speaker and agenda items that wouldn’t be found at Mackinac, which has drawn criticism for accomplishing little amid heavy wining and dining by lobbyists.

The not-so-subtle message to lawmakers around the state: There’s more to Michigan manufacturing than cars and trucks. “Our Big Three” continue to be profitable market leaders.
