Smaller theme schools in Grand Rapids have caught the attention of many parents, and the recent influx of applications for a limited number of student openings is proof. When the school finds its permanent home in the core city, it could well become an economic boon for surrounding retail and restaurants.

It will not be easy getting a seat in the Grand Rapids Public Schools' planned University Prep Academy.
Parents of more than 220 students applied for the 128 spots in the school, the first specialized academy in Superintendent Bernard Taylor's planned public-private partnerships.
