Muskegon leaders propose principal shopping district designation to promote downtown revitalization

Downtown Muskegon is in the throes of a massive revitalization, and new money from a state designation will provide funds for marketing the shopping district. The catch is that the money must come from the businesses themselves in an already tight economy.

According to excerpts from the story:

Continued promotion and marketing of downtown Muskegon might hinge on the approval of a special-assessment district for downtown commercial properties. Muskegon Main Street is proposing a "principal shopping district" as allowed by state law that would provide a stable and sustainable foundation of support for its marketing, promotion and development activities, agency officials said.

The district must be approved by the Muskegon City Commission, which begins looking at the proposal Feb. 9. The special assessments would be for commercial properties only; downtown residential properties are exempt.

Overall, the special assessment would raise an estimated $135,000 to go toward downtown programs and provide sidewalk snow removal within the district.
