Wind energy, biomass energy, and hydroelectric power are all sources of renewable energy the City of Holland and local businesses are considering to 'green' the city. The options include purchasing these renewable sources from locations outside the city, maybe even outside the state.

All of Michigan is in the infancy of a renewable energy movement. Municipal energy companies are thinking about how to diversify the kinds of energy they produce and purchase. Corporations are creating their own energy while reducing their carbon footprints.
During Hope College's final event Thursday in a week of Focus the Nation events, a panel of local and state government officials, company representatives and educators presented plans and dreams for using renewable energy locally -- especially wind energy.
"The technology that powers that old, old windmill is a technology that is fresh and new and modern," Holland Mayor Al McGeehan said, referring to DeZwaan on Windmill Island.
The company's goal is to be using 100 percent renewable energy by 2020.
