The proposed site for the new Salvation Army Kroc Center places it in the heart of a neighborhood with 11,000 kids. The center will provide recreational activities for inner city youth and is being financed primarily by a grant from the estate of the McDonald’s heiress Joan Kroc.

The vacant lot and swing set next to Tom and Carol Bordeaux's home at 16 Southview St. SE is the closest thing to a recreation center you will find in their neighborhood.
But, a few years from now, their property will be part of a $15 million recreation center that will feature an indoor swimming pool, ice skating rink, a gym, a climbing wall, a performing arts center and a worship center.
Nauta said Thursday his eyes were opened to the property's potential after Brian Prevost, a Garfield Park neighborhood resident and real estate agent, convinced him they could transform the site by acquiring the Division Avenue businesses that backed up to the city land.
