Millions in investment reviving Grand Rapids’ South Division Avenue

Outdoor art, new retail, galleries, restaurants and pubs enliven the formerly shabby South Division area and that drawing card brings new residents and new opportunities to an area seeing it’s first major revitalization in decades. With a proposed Bus Rapid Transit system planned along that corridor, millions more investment could be in the district’s near future.

South Division Avenue -- a once derided, sometimes feared section of downtown -- is not what it used to be.

Old buildings are seeing new life. Businesses and residents are moving in. Shoppers flock to art shows and galleries for monthly Avenue for the Arts events.

"The nature of the area has changed dramatically," said Grand Rapids Police Capt. Rebecca Whitman.
