Muskegon touts social justice, economic development as sustainability issues

Social justice and economics play as much a part in creating sustainable communities as environmental protection, and one civic leader says that is only part of what has piqued the interest of cities like Chicago, whose leaders seek to emulate West Michigan’s grassroots sustainability movements.

FERRYSBURG — Think of the growing "sustainability" movement and environmental issues normally come to mind.

But it's much more than that. The Muskegon Area Sustainability Coalition had its first regional Lakeshore conference Tuesday morning and placed economic development and social justice alongside the environment in creating communities that can thrive over the long haul.

Sustainability speaks to the alliance where the environment, economics and social welfare are all served through community initiatives coming from government, business and nonprofit groups.

Sustainability is everything from the West Michigan office furniture industry designing and developing office systems that are kind to the environment and foster efficient work to consuming locally the $1 billion in farm products produced in the region each year…
