DeVos venture base camp for Boy Scouts first of its kind in Michigan

The state's first base camp for the Boy Scouts of America's National High Adventure, the newest co-ed program for young people, is coming to Gerber Scout Camp and will provide a venue for Grand Rapids-based Gerald R. Ford Council scouts who want to challenge themselves with high adventure outdoor activities. Scouting leaders expect the base to serve 500 participants a year.

According to excerpts from the story:

The caliber of the programs offered by the Gerald R. Ford Council is about to get even better and far more adventurous. The council will complete the building of the Richard and Helen DeVos Venture Base at Gerber Scout Camp by fall of 2008 or spring of 2009, as part of the Boy Scouts’ National High Adventure program.

Venturers can pick from a menu of activities that include rock climbing in the Canadian Rockies, white water rafting the tumultuous New River in West Virginia, winter camping in igloos, and big lake sailing.
