White River property to be preserved

After six years of debate over what to do with 232 acres of heavily forested land along the White River, Whitehall Township will purchase the property from Muskegon County and continue the preservation already underway. To date, completed improvement projects include restoring the riverbank, erosion prevention, and the construction of several sets of stairsteps.

According to excerpts from the story:

A heavily wooded piece of county-owned land, which drew lots of attention in 2001 when a golf course was proposed for the site, will soon be owned by Whitehall Township.

The township's $300,000 offer to buy Hilt's Landing on the White River from Muskegon County was accepted by county commissioners Thursday during their community development/strategic planning committee meeting.

Township officials sought ownership of the 232-acre property just east of U.S. 31 in Whitehall Township in hopes of keeping Hilt's Landing undeveloped with some low-impact improvements.
