Quality of life issues such as access to venues where families and individuals can participate in sports is a major concern for regional development. A West Michigan winter sports complex is on the drawing board for $1 million in enhancements that will open the center year-round and bring more tourism dollars to the area.

If summer tourism in Muskegon is driven by the hundreds of thousands who pack into Michigan's Adventure Amusement Park, winter tourism similarly is defined by the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex.
Muskegon's winter tourism season doesn't compare to the summer. The Sports Complex attracted a record 22,000 visitors last year to luge, cross-country ski and ice skate, but tourism promoters say there is potential to grow at the Muskegon State Park.
The Battle Creek-based Kellogg Foundation -- one of the state's wealthiest foundations -- and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources are setting up the recreational facility to be a more important attraction in the county's overall tourism industry. The first of three phases of development is being completed this fall.
