GRAND RAPIDS -- A once-moribund stretch of Wealthy Street SE continues its comeback with a new tavern, The Winchester, throwing open its doors inside what had been a haggard building used by a plumbing firm. Husband and wife co-owners Paul and Jessica Lee said they want to create a "new American tavern" by renovating the century-old building.
Getting the place open cost twice what they expected, but the Lees said the cost resulted in them raising their standards for the type of business The Winchester has become. With its dark oak bar and booths, wood floors, high ceilings and wood pillars, the place has the feel of something new and something familiar, which is what the Lees sought.
