Holland’s Windmill Island gets new wind turbine

As cities across the state look to the future of supplying state-required percentages of electricity through alternative means, Holland prepares to erect a test wind turbine on the city’s famed Windmill Island. The turbine will gather wind power statistics to determine the feasibility of a permanent industrial turbine on the site.

HOLLAND -- The nearly 250-year-old DeZwaan windmill at Windmill Island Gardens is getting a svelte, brainy new neighbor.

A nearly 200-foot-high pole that will collect wind speed and other weather information that could be used to build a power-generating wind turbine on the island soon will go up. The city's Zoning Board of Appeals on Thursday approved two variances clearing the way for its installation.
