Old YMCA set for $20 million renovation

The former YMCA won’t sit vacant for long. Closed in July 2005 when the Y moved to its new home across town, Second Story Properties now plans to renovate the 8-story building into luxury condos. The conversion from public fitness facility to comfortable residential space is considered one of the more unique and ambitious building reuse projects currently underway in Grand Rapids.

Once completed, the $20 million redevelopment will add fifty high-end condos to the Center City district. Units will range from 800 to 2,500 square feet. And prospective buyers can choose from a variety of floor plans, including 3-bedroom penthouses and two-story town homes. Other amenities include covered, off street parking, a rooftop deck with views of the city, and carefully restored classic architecture, including limestone embellishments and energy efficient Palladian style windows.

Originally built in 1914, the Fitzgerald is conveniently located in the heart of downtown. It sits immediately adjacent to the newly restored Grand Rapids Public Library, shaded Veterans Park, and the Civic Theatre. Renovation of the Fitzgerald is scheduled for completion in spring 2007.
