The makeup of Eastown has changed over the years, from businesses remodeling their facades, relocating out of the area to bigger spaces or like the one that simply blew up (but was rebuilt and now houses my favorite shoe store, All City Kicks).

But the more they change, the more they stay the same.

And this is a great thing for the one neighborhood in Grand Rapids that has been fairly stable for over three decades.

Mulligan’s Pub, the original Eastown neighborhood watering hole, will turn 30 years old on Saturday, and at this fine, ripe age, it is looking good!

The charm of Mulligan’s is how it operates on many levels in our community. It is a fine spot for locals wanting to rock the digital jukebox, the penny pincher who wants to take advantage of the city’s best happy hour specials or the music-lover who wants to check out the many genres of original musical acts that grace their stage in the adjacent venue, the Other:Side.

Dare I say they have something for everyone, and this is why they still continue to attract a loyal following made up many different generations, present at any time, around the bar.

If you haven’t been there in a while, this might be a great time to visit again. If you are feeling really adventurous, travel down memory lane with a Mulligan’s Stew. Just do me a favor, go easy on the hair products, as this fiery drink is still a hair-singeing experience for the inexperienced drinker.

This Saturday, you can expect to take advantage outrageous specials over the course of this special day including $3 PBR pitchers, bottled beer, Long Islands, select call drinks, and $1 Strews, PBR Pints, Blatz cans and Rumple Stews.

In addition, you can have a chance to win some give-a-ways while listening to the music of the Total Blam Blams & Jake Stilson and the Mi Mi Mi’s

“If you’re into pop-rock love songs and girls that know how to sing, you have to check out The Total Blam Blams,” says Nick Weaver of Prospecto Music Festival, “C’mon, they got their name from a Bowie song!”

Mulligan’s Pub is truly not ready to settle down into their golden years just yet — and that is why they are still so vibrant and essential to this neighborhood with a flare for local everything.
